Talk to Static

Talking in voice

Outside a conversation it only answers when it hears its name, anywhere in the sentence: Static, what do you think? works, and so does what do you think, Static? Once it has answered you, you have about 20 seconds to reply without the name. That window adjusts itself to how your server talks.

It answers everything said in the channel, so there's no need to use its name.

It sticks with the person it's talking to. Others chatting nearby won't set it off. Anyone can join in by saying its name, and then they're part of the conversation too.

It also answers to , in case the speech-to-text mishears its name.

Taking turns

It waits for you to finish, and gives you a moment longer if you trail off mid-thought. When several people talk at once, it waits until everyone's done and answers them together. To cut it off, just talk over it: it turns itself down straight away, and stops once you've been talking for about a second. A laugh or a quick "yeah" won't stop it. Only the person it's answering (or already talking with) can stop it that way; anyone else talking just turns it down. /stop silences it instantly.

Cut it off by accident? Say go on, keep going or what were you saying? within a minute and a half and it picks up where it stopped, without starting over.

What it knows

It knows who's in the call and recognises people by their account, not their nickname. It can see what you're up to on Discord, like the game you're playing or your music, and brings it up now and then. For news, scores, prices, releases or anything recent, it searches the web first and answers from what it finds. Over time it keeps short notes on people, so it remembers what you're into. It also remembers the group's big moments and inside jokes, and brings them back up when they fit. Maths, unit conversions and "what time is it in Tokyo?" are worked out exactly, not guessed.

You can ask about anyone in the server, even if they're not in the call: Static, what roles does Firefly have? or Static, list my roles. It answers from the server itself, not the web, and says so if it can't find someone.

Looking out for people

If nobody's talking to it but someone sounds genuinely heated or down for a while, it may chime in once to check on them, sincerely or with a joke, taking into account what they're doing (a rough match or a bad pull). It keeps this rare: at most once every 10 minutes, and it never lectures.

Sending it away

Say Static, you can leave now or useUse /leave. It also leaves on its own when everyone else has gone. Asking works. Force-disconnecting it doesn't go unanswered, though: it comes straight back to say a few words to whoever kicked it, then leaves on its own terms. After a long quiet spell it forgets the conversation, so the next call starts fresh.

Text chat

Same personality, in writing. It doesn't answer every message, only when you call it:

When you call it in, it reads the last 10 messages first, so it knows what you're talking about.

It can see images. Post one (or reply to one) and ask about it. It can also look at profile pictures: Static, what do you think of my pfp?

@mention people in your message and it knows who you mean. Questions about members and roles work here too.

Its messages never ping anyone, even if someone tries to make it.

Reminders

Your own reminders arrive as a DM. Group ones ping everyone in the channel. If you're in voice when a reminder is due, it says it out loud too.

Polls

Static, make a poll: pizza or tacos

It creates a real Discord poll. It posts the choices with number reactions (1️⃣ 2️⃣ …): vote by clicking one. It closes the poll on time, posts the result and announces the winner in voice. Or type it: !poll Pizza tonight? | yes, no | 10 minutes

Roasts

Static, roast nvx Static, talk shit about him Static, roast me

It goes after whoever you name (or "him"/"her": the last person who spoke), using what it knows about them, what they're playing and what they just said. All in good fun.

Clips

Clip that! Static, clip the last 10 seconds

It saves the last 30 seconds of the call (up to a minute) as an MP3 in the voice channel's chat. If two people ask at once, you get one clip, not two.

Quote book

Static, quote that Quote what tori said Static, give us a random quote

Someone said something legendary? "Quote that" saves the last line someone else said (or "quote me" for your own) to the server's quote book and posts it in the chat. Pull one up any time with /quote, or search it: /quote search:mob masher. To save a text message, right-click it, then Apps, then Save as quote. Pull one up any time with !quote, or search it: !quote mob masher. To save a text message, reply to it with !quote.

Game night

Coins, dice (d20, 2d6+3), a random number, picking a person or an option, and splitting everyone in the call into teams. The randomness is real (done by the computer, not made up by the AI), so nobody can accuse it of cheating.

Weather

Static, what's the weather in Denver tomorrow? Static, is it gonna rain in Chicago today?

Live forecasts for anywhere, today, tonight, tomorrow or later this week. Leave out the place and it uses the local weather. Say which city.

Commands

Type / in any channel to see these. Most replies are only visible to you.

Fluxer doesn't have slash commands for bots yet, so type these as messages in any text channel. Answers about you (your profile, your reminders) come by DM.

Discord and Fluxer

Static is on Discord and on our own Fluxer server (), with the same personality, voice and features. Use the Discord / Fluxer switch at the top of this page to see the commands for the one you're on.

• On Fluxer, commands start with ! instead of /, private answers come by DM, and polls are reaction polls.
• It keeps a separate memory on each: its notes on people, server memories, quotes and reminders on Fluxer aren't mixed with Discord's, unless you link your accounts.

Linking your accounts (optional). Use /link on Discord to get a code, then type !link 123456 on Fluxer within 10 minutes (or start with !link on Fluxer and enter the code with /link). After that it knows both accounts are you and shares what it remembers about you between them - nothing else. /unlink or !unlink undoes it, and so does /forget.

Privacy and memory

/profile shows what it has written down about you, /forget deletes it, and /profiling stops it taking notes on you. Server admins can wipe a channel's current conversation with /reset.

The owner can read text logs of what it heard and said, for fixing problems.

How it works

Every spoken reply goes through four stages, all on one home PC with one graphics card.

It feels quick because it starts early. During your pauses it already transcribes what you said and starts on a reply, then plays it only once you've actually finished. It speaks the first sentence while the rest is still being written.

It also learns the room. If people keep cutting it off, it keeps its replies shorter. It picks up on mood from your words and tone of voice, and learns which way of responding goes over best with your crowd.
